Introduction to Economic Statistics

History and Status Quo of Major

Economic Statistics in Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics has a long history. Established in 1958, this major is a traditional dominant major in Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. This major has made outstanding achievements in running schools, and won the “brand major” of colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province, the key discipline of colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province, the pilot program of comprehensive major reform of colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province, and the first-class characteristic major of colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province. With a sound discipline system, it has a postdoctoral research station in statistics, level I doctoral and master’s degree program in statistics, level II doctoral and master’s degree program in quantitative economics, and a master’s degree program in applied statistics. In 2015, the major Economic Statistics ranked the fifth in China.

Training Orientation and Objectives

Orientation: Highlight the characteristics of enterprise accounting and financial data statistical analysis in the cultivation of the unified accounting calculation direction of economic statistics; highlight the characteristics of statistical measurement analysis in finance, securities and insurance and other financial sectors in the cultivation of the financial statistics direction of economic statistics; and highlight the characteristics of “broad foundation, broad vision and comprehensive quality” in the cultivation of top talent experimental class direction of economic statistics.

Objectives: Cultivate comprehensive innovative statistics personnel with the quality of “Trust, Sensitivity, Honesty and Perseverance”.

Faculty

The major has 46 teachers, including 13 professors and 9 associate professors; 6 doctoral supervisors and 22 master supervisors; 2 provincial famous teachers, 5 provincial academic leaders and 1 provincial young and middle-aged backbone teacher.

Features of Major

 (1) Fruitful Scientific Research Results

In recent years, the discipline has presided over 36 national-level topics, 28 national-level topics under study and 2 humanities and social sciences programs of the Ministry of Education, issued more than 330 theses; published 15 monographs, 1 translation and6 teaching materials, and obtained 2 national awards, 10 provincial/ministerial awards and 3 other awards.

 (2) Innovative Teaching Results

In recent years, the teachers of the School have completed 10 provincial teaching reform topics. Falling in Love with Statistics was approved as the national video open course. The textbook of Statistics has won the first and second prizes of the excellent textbooks for higher education in Jiangxi Province. They edited 6 textbooks for the major of statistics. Statistics has been approved as provincial high-quality resource sharing course construction program. Teaching Practice Program of Statistics won the first prize of supporting practical teaching program of national business education practice teaching competition. Innovation Exploration and Application of Practical Teaching System of Economic Statistics won the first prize of 2014 teaching achievement of Jiangxi Province.

 (3) Training Mode of Distinctive Characteristics

After long-term exploration and practice, the statistics in Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics has gradually formed a unique application-oriented talent training mode of “three linkages, three advances and three supports” (i.e.: linkage of classroom, campus and society; advance of learning methods, applying methods and innovative methods; support by basic theoretical education platform, practice drilling platform, and innovative research platform).

 (4) Excellent talent training effect

According to incomplete statistics, there are nearly 20 people in the undergraduate statistics in our school who hold the positions of party and government leaders at or above the deputy district (department) level, more than 200 people who have become experts and scholars with high professional technical positions, and more than 200 people who have become entrepreneurs with their own companies (including shares). During the period of “the Twelfth Five-year Plan”, the regular undergraduate employment rate of the school ranked among the best in the whole university every year, and the enrollment rate of postgraduate entrance examination was stable in the top three of the university.

Introduction to Applied Statistics

On the basis of original economic statistics major, the school added the applied statistics major in 2012.

Training Orientation and Objectives

This major cultivates comprehensive innovative and entrepreneurial talents who have the characteristics of “broad foundation, broad vision and comprehensive quality”, have all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique and beauty, have a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics and finance theories, are proficient in the operation of mainstream statistical software in the world, are good at applying statistical methods and data mining technology, can engage in financial management, securities investment analysis, insurance management and actuarial work in finance, securities, insurance and relevant decision-making institutions of government departments, and have the quality of “Trust, Sensitivity, Honesty and Perseverance”.

This major now has 14 teachers, including 6 professors and 3 associate professors; 2 doctoral supervisors and 8 master supervisors; 1 provincial famous teacher, and 3 provincial academic leaders.

Features of Major

(1) Fruitful Scientific Research Results

In recent years, the members of the professional teaching department have successively presided over more than 20 national topics, presided over more than 30 soft science programs, social science planning programs and provincial-level topics  in Jiangxi Province. They have issued more than 100 theses in important academic journals at home and abroad, and published more than 10 textbooks and monographs. Their achievements in scientific research have won more than 10 awards, including the third prize of excellent achievements in humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education and the first prize of excellent achievements in philosophy and social sciences of Jiangxi Province.

 (2) Teaching Achievements of Innovation

In recent years, the members of the professional teaching department attach great importance to teaching research to form a strong teaching and research atmosphere, and have made breakthroughs in quality engineering programs. The teachers in the school have completed 8 provincial-level educational reform programs. Falling in Love with Statistics was approved as national open video course. Econometrics was approved as the construction program of high-quality resource sharing course in Jiangxi Province. Statistics won the first and second prizes of the excellent textbooks for higher education in Jiangxi Province. They edited 6 textbooks on statistics. Introduction to Actuarial Science

Based on a large number of investigations and full expert certification, the school added the actuarial science major in 2018.

Teachers

This major now has 12 teachers, including 4 professors and 3 associate professors; 2 Yangtze chair professors from the Ministry of Education; 2 doctoral supervisors and 6 master supervisors; 1 provincial academic leader.

Training Orientation and Objectives

This major cultivates actuarial and risk management professionals who have solid mathematical foundation and generous basic knowledge of statistics, economics, insurance and finance, are proficient in actuarial science and modern risk management theories, methods and skills, can be engaged in risk management, insurance pricing, actuarial analysis, investment and financial management, asset evaluation, solvency supervision and other work in insurance companies, bank securities, investment companies, enterprises and institutions, and have the quality of “Trust, Sensitivity, Honesty and Perseverance”. This major encourages the students to take part in the examination of actuaries in North America or Britain while learning professional courses, and try to pass a number of qualification examination courses in the university, so as to lay a solid foundation for actuarial profession in the future.
